What is the difference between a cancerous tumor and metastasis?

Answer by EMT1400
Metastasis is the spread of a disease, such as a cancerous tumor.

A cancerous tumor is an isolated place where the cancer starts such as the lung or colon. Metastasis is when it spreads to another place. Usually metastasis is a very bad sign:(

Metastasis is when cancer cells have broken off the original tumor and settled in another area of the body and starts a new tumor there. A cancerous tumor is a growth with cancer, it can be the primary tumor or it can be a metastatic tumor.

Metastasis is spread...the term can refer to infections as well as to malignant cells. A cancerous tumor is a localized mass of malignant cells. Metastasis of cells occurs when some of the cells from a tumor break free and enter the blood or lymph and travel to other sites in the body, often forming new tumors in other organs and tissues. When this happens, the diagnosis is metastatic cancer. In some cancers, such as breast cancer, lymph nodes may be removed and biopsied to look for the presence of malignant cells, which would indicate metastasis via the lymphatic ducts from the primary tumor in the breast.

Metastasis means there is a spread of the cancer. A cancer may start in the colon, then metastasize into the liver. When cancer has spread, it's not good news at all, AND it could be hiding elsewhere as well. just not detectable.
