Sorry to hear.

It is impossible to say, but having cancer spread to the brain is not a good sign. She could last for months, or may pass away sooner.

Spend as much time as you can with her, and do whatever it takes to keep her comfortable.

God Bless you both.

Did anyone suggest hospice?? It sounds awfully serious, and I would ask the dr. for a prognosis and a life expectancy, and what more they can do for your mom....like using hospice, as they can help control any and every symptom that comes along...No one can give you a life expectancy over the internet, unfortunately...

Bless you both.

Contact the American Brain Tumor Society. They were of great help to me. She should not have pain. Is she on hospic? If so they are of great help for her and family support. Prepare yourself, family and her. I helped my husband die of Brain Cancer and prepare to go to heaven. That is the best you can do for your mother. Pray for help God will help you. God bless you and your mother, Mary

It really depends on the type of tumor and the pace at which it is growing. Has she seen an oncologist? I am assuming so, since she was sent home with nothing more that can be done. I would call the oncologist ( or any doc she did see) and ask them her life expectancy. This isn't a cold question, but you (& your mom) need to prepare yourselves. You can tell them her functioning status and her deterioration and they should be able to give you an estimation. My father-in-law died of a brain tumor 2 yearts ago...10 weeks to the diagnosis. He, too was sent home without any options of treatment. Good luck to you and your mother. Make the best of this time with her, you'll never get to do it again. God bless you.

Standard of care in that situation would be oral steroids (Decadron in pill form along with a medication to block acid secretions in the stomach) and a brief course of whole-brain radiotherapy... unless she is otherwise in such poor condition aside from the brain lesions that they suggest not doing the radiation.

The textbook answer on median survival (50% still alive) would be:

1 month with no treatment.

2 months with steroids

6 months with whole-brain radiotherapy.

Aloha
