What is considered early detection for melanoma (skin cancer)?I have a mole that this week became inflamed, swollen, and oozing pus. Everything I read says early detection has 95% cure, but is early detection considered going to the doctor as soon as changes are noticed or is early detection having a mole checked before it changes. Please someone help, I am scared to death. I have a drs. appt on Friday, but I am terrified of what they may say.

You are still in early detection, and it might no be melanoma after all. Don't worry, go see your doctor and it'll be solved.

First thing, take a deep breath, stop worrying. There is no reason to worry when you don't even know if it's cancer or not. It could be a lot of different things, it could just be an infection or something.
Go see your doctor and don't worry, I am sure you'll be fine.

Looks like you got an infection rather than cancer because of pus ( a product of bacterial infection). Cancer detection of a melanoma includes the ABCDE of Melanoma Screening:
A) Appearance: Look strange
B) Border: rough edge border (contrast with smooth edge)
C) Color: If more than 1 color (especially red): Suspect cancer
D) Dimension: More than 1 cm across: Suspect cancer
E) Elevation: If surface is rough (as compared to smooth) Suspect cancer
Locations: Face or back (areas of skin most exposed to the sun

Infllammation pus and swelling are not signs of melanoma. This may not even be a mole, but some other type of lesion. Early detection of a melanoma is when a small lesion is seen to begin growing and has not gone to other parts of the body.
Skin Cancer & Melanoma Survivor - Shonda Schilling's Story
In February of 2001, at the age of 33, Shonda was diagnosed with stage 2 malignant melanoma. A total of 5 surgeries left 25 scars crisscrossing her back, arms, legs and chest. Shonda and her family were living in Arizona at the time and they immediately adopted responsible sun habits into their daily routines. In October 2001 Shondas husband, Curt Schilling, won the World Series co-MVP honor for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The media quickly picked up on her skin cancer diagnosis. This is her story.
