How long can someone live who is diagnosed with thyroid cancer?I have a dear friend diagnosed with papillary cancer of the thyroid. She had a surgery already and will undergo other treatments in the future. My friend is still in her early 30's and has children. She is a very optimistic gal and lives life to the fullest. But somehow, I am concerned for her. I don't know how long she will have to live (as in the case of other cancer patients) and would want to spend more qualtiy time with her and make up for the times that were lost.
Also, I learned from my friend recently that the cancer cells had spread to her lymph nodes.

Thyroid cancer is not fatal usually. My mother had it and had surgery where they cut out 80% of her thyroid, now she takes medication to make up for what her tyroid is supposed to do. Don't worry too much!!

It is very difficult to say without more specific information. Often surgery can remove all the cancer and future treatment often relates to level of the thyroid hormones which are reduced due to the thyroid having been removed.
Your friends post operative appointment would discuss all of this with her. She will also have had tests to see if the cancer had spread.
By the sound of things her optimistic outlook may have came from her follow up appointment.
Maybe you should discuss your concerns with her. This may reassure you. Best wishes to you both.

I have it. I was diagnosed last year and had my thyroid removed in March. I read about the treatments and opted not to do any of them. Thyroid cancer is very slow growing. Even if the cancer is not removed, you can still live a long time. I also had it in my lymphnodes. In all honesty, I don't think I would have had my thyroid removed if I had done more research. I have been on levothyroxine since and have had so much trouble trying to lose weight even though they say my levels are fine. I am also tired all of the time too. I would have done alternative therapy. If your friend has not had her thyroid removed yet, tell her/him to research - research - research first!!!! Once you take it out you are faced with taking a pill every day for the rest of your life. She has plenty of time to consider alternatives. Also, feel free to email me at inkspotter2000 at yahoo for any questions related to my experience.

Dont worry, your friend is likely not going to suffer from this kind of cancer, and is likely to survive..80%, which good.Sorry about that, hope she gets well soon.I quick surgical procedure where the thyroid can be taken out is a good solution.

My niece has thyroid cancer and she is an opera singer. She had surgery and is doing just fine. My mother and father died from lung and lymphoma respectively so we are high risk. She had surgery more than 2 years ago she is only 26 but doing quite well. Her doc says if your gonna have cancer its the best one to get. Its curable. She is fine.! Good luck.
