What should be our next step after being diagnosed with metastatic melanoma/?My wife had a 5cm mass that was in the soft tissue in her groin that was diagnosed as a metastatic melanoma with no primary source. The PET SCAN has came back negative, with no signs of anything in her blood and any problems with her eye exam. She has no symptoms, just the mass that was taken out. Is this very common?

Surgical removal (excision) of the affected skin is the most effective treatment for melanoma. Excision involves removing the entire melanoma along with a border (margin) of normal-appearing skin. Additional treatment may be needed based on the stage of the melanoma.

About 5% of melanomas have an unknown primary.
We do not have a standardize treatment for metastatic disease.
Many people with stage 4 disease are referred to a clinical trial.
Your options should have discussed with you by your oncologist.
